What to Bring

If there is one way to describe surfing in the Pacific Northwest - it's unpredictable! Not only are we concerned about the wind and the waves..but the weather, too! Morning fog and drizzle can turn into an afternoon heatwave or a glassy morning can be blown away by strong afternoon winds that can quickly chill a tired surfer girl . With that in mind there are a few things you will need to bring:

  • A Little Muscle - NO you don't have to be all buff and be able to swim 4 miles a day, but a little shoulder strengthening will greatly improve your time in the water and chances of catching some waves. If you don't already have much of an upper-body workout routine, add some push-ups to your day. They're the best way to get your shoulders and back ready for paddling and popping up on the board.

  • Food - Surfing in cold water is hard work! You'll definately be working up an appetite. We will provide breakfast foods, but you are responsible for lunch time snacks and dinner. Make sure to get lots of healthy carbo-rich foods like bagels and peanut butter, energy bars, and bananas. There is a grocery store in Westport to buy food, as well as several eating establishments, or you can bring your favorites from home.

  • Water - Many people neglect this important item! A dehydrated surfer will chill MUCH MUCH faster without the proper blood flow, so be sure to bring a water bottle or two to keep full at all times. Not into plain water? Then pack watered down juices or lemonade. Don't worry about having to pee! We've got the ocean at our feet!

  • Sunscreen - We are working on a deal to get sunscreen donations from a big pharmacy chain....we'll let you know!

  • Wetsuit - if you have your own suit, by all means bring it! The water temperature will probably be around 50F, so a 4/3 or 5/4 mm suit would work best, depending on how quickly you chill. These will be provided if you do not have one.

  • Neoprene booties and gloves - again, if you have them, bring them. Otherwise they will be provided. Depending on the weather, we may not need gloves, but submerged feet can get cold fast!

  • Surfboard - If you got one bring it! If you have more than one bring that too! Otherwise they will be provided.

  • Cold weather clothes - The coast of Washington is not the North Shore of Oahu! Mornings tend to be foggy and chilly until it clears up (IF it does) in the afternoon. Even if the day does turn sunny and warm, it will quickly turn cold at night. Bring fleece jackets, polypropolene, and shell jackets for your top side; polypro pants and nylon shells for your legs. Gloves and hats, too. It's better to be overprepared than not!

  • Warm weather clothes - Hey it's summer! Surfer girls don't want to be wrapped in piles of clothing! Yes, ladies, if we do a sundance we do stand a chance of good ole hot summer weather. Bring a pair of shorts and a top for when it works.

  • Swimsuit - For wearing under your wetsuit.

  • Sunglasses - To protect those peepers.

  • A Positive Attitude! - Above all, bring a smile and an outlook that this weekend will be all about learning in a fun environment and not about competition or who stands up first. Everyone learns at their own pace and the best goal to set is to develop a strong knowledge base that you can build on for the future. We want everyone to leave the weekend confident in their potential and stoked for more surfing!
