WELCOME!  The members of Chicks on Sticks along with the Rhode Island Chapter of Surfrider are THRILLED to offer our instructional program to another group of girls and women this August!  Those of you who join us will experience the magic of Mother Ocean, while learning the basic skills and secrets of surfing.  Chicks on Sticks volunteers have instructed more than 400 girls and women over the last 8 years.  We are confident in saying that all of these students have developed a deeper understanding of our precious oceans and shores! Additionally, many have formed new friendships, become avid surfers and valuable activists with Surfrider Foundation Chapters around the US.

The goal of the Chicks on Sticks Instructional program is to provide girls and women with an exceptional learning environment, focused on surfing etiquette and safety. Standing up is fun, but it comes second. During this weekend you will learn things that you would never know if you just grabbed a board and ventured out into the waves on your own. So many lessons that unknowing girls, boys, men and women learn the hard way; such as safety in the water, choosing equipment, wave formation and board handling skills! Finally, we'll spend hours in the water aboard some good stable longboards and introduce you to the enigmatic art of catching a wave!

No matter what your skill level - whether you can already stand or don't know a goofy foot from a regular one - you will leave this weekend smiling from the inside out! You'll gain a keen appreciation for the art and sport of surfing, and perhaps find yourself smitten with a new passion?

This years instructional program will be held the weekend of August 12 - 14, 2005. We will start on Friday evening from 6:00 - 9:00 PM at the Mosby Center on the URI Bay Campus with introductions, a preliminary theory and equipment lesson and pizza for eats! Saturday and Sunday's lessons will be conducted at a new location this year - Scarborough Beach in the somewhat sleepy beach town of Narragansett, RI. The ideal facilities at Scarborough will allow us ample room for "sand instruction" and for being in the water.

So, if you are ready to start planning for the best weekend of your summer, go to the registration page! Course fees are: Surfrider members $50.00; Student, non-Surfrider members $65.00, Adult non-Surfrider members $75.00. For non-Surfrider members, your price for the weekend includes a one year membership to the Surfrider Foundation, the renowned coastal environmental organization whose 60 grass roots chapters across the United States and 4 International affiliates work on a multitude of community issues such as water quality, shoreline access, and coastal erosion.

We want to make this weekend the best experience possible. If you have any questions or concerns after reading the information provided in other areas of this web page, please feel free to contact instructor Kira Stillwell or call 401-789-1336 and leave a message.
