Washington Women's Surf Camp!!
painting by unknown PNW artist

WELCOME!!! The members of Chicks on Sticks are THRILLED to be coming to the Pacific Northwest this June to share the allure, magic, skills, and secrets of surfing with the women of Washington! The idea of bringing Chicks on Sticks to Washington was spawned by a friendship that stretched all the way to little Rhode Island, and the NEED for women in Washington to have a comfortable environment where they could learn all they wanted to know surfing, to become educated surfing afficionados, and to form new surfing friendships.

The Chicks motto is to provide an exceptional learning environment focusing on safety first - and standing up second. This weekend you will learn things that you normally would never know if you just ventured out on your own as a newbie, and that many unknowing folks learn the hard way, such as safety in the water, surfing etiquette, the energy of waves, how to read the waves, and proper equipment. Finally we'll hop aboard some big, stable longboards and let you in on the enigmatic art of catching a wave!

No matter what your level - whether you can already stand or don't know a goofy foot from a regular one - you will leave this weekend pumped and with a lifetime of surfing ahead of you!

The camp will be held the weekend of June 22-24, 2001 at Westhaven State Park in the little surf town of Westport, Washington. The ideal facilities at Westhaven will allow us ample room for "sand instruction" and two choices for being on the water: either the Cove or the Jetty, depending on surf conditions. If the weather looks too foul for the "sand instruction", we'll mosey over to the Boarding Factory and do the dryland stuff inside.

Additionally, we are pleased to have the Washington Chapter of the Surfrider Foundation be co-sponsor of this event. Your price for the weekend includes membership to the National Surfrider Foundation, the renown international coastal environment organization whose chapters work locally on a multitude of issues such as water quality, shoreline access, and coastal erosion.

We want to make this weekend the best experience possible. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact instructor Kira Stillwell at kira@uri.edu, Jill Bodnar at jill@edc.uri.edu, or Cindy Barger at the Washington Chapter Surfrider Foundation at 206/783-3173, cindy_barger@hotmail.com.
